EDDM vs. list-based direct mail: which should you use?

EDDM reaches every delivery address on selected carrier routes without a named list. List-based direct mail targets specific households or businesses from first-party or purchased data. Use EDDM when geographic coverage matters most. Use a list when selection, suppression, personalization, or customer history should shape the audience.

Both are direct mail. They are not interchangeable. The wrong choice wastes postage or misses the audience you already paid to build.

Choose EDDM when

Your offer is truly local, you care about every door on a route, and you do not need named personalization or suppression lists.

Choose list-based mail when

You have a responsive file, need to exclude customers, or want VDP fields that depend on identity (loan amount, renewal date, segment).

Production note

We produce both. Start with the campaign goal, geography, available data, and personalization needs, then choose the approach that fits the audience.
